Picture
Here's another series of photo taken using camera phone and merged together into an animated gif showing our cute xiaobudian cleaning herself after dinner with tissue enthusiastically

More Sultan Shoal

More photos from Sultan Shoal, this time is taken with my camera phone therefore the quality is poor as you can see lots of noise and strange colouring along lines where they merge. Plus, a little extra from google earth

Picture(52)

Picture(53)
Notice the strips of bright lines for the top two photographs? And the slightly grainy particles especially obvious along the sky

Picture(54)
Night shot are very grainy as the quality of shots taken are very low, but heck, its only a camera phone.

State of the art, high resolution Singapore skyline it read. Well, if some photos could make it to Tomorrow.sg perhaps we have a young amateur photographer trying to share some of his/her masterpieces with others. But the photos are poorly taken and is far from state of the art, the night shots are blur when viewed at full resolution that it gave me the idea that the fellow did not use a tripod. Secondly, the photos are grossly underexposed, most of the buildings are too dark and none of the details of the buildings could be seen, giving me the impression that the picture was taken using normal automode found in most digital cameras.

And this they called state of the art and published on Tomorrow.sg? Were the editors on the effect of too much booze when they publish this? Why not look at a truely state of the art type local photoblog instead (warning: broadband recommended).

This is my 2nd trip to this beautiful island of Singapore. The first time, I lacked a tripod so I couldn't take nice pictures of the island to share with you. This time round, I find I lacked a decent camera to capture more breathtaking scenary photos. The lack of panoramic function/wide angle lens mean I couldn't take in the most beautiful shots in one photo.

SShoal05002
Shimmering waters, a photo taken on the 40 minutes trip to Sultan Shoal, a small island no bigger than a soccer field in Singapore. See the water splashes and the reflection of the sunlight just beneath one of the many passing ships

SShoal05094
That's the problem when you put the tripod on a grass patch... the simple act of depressing the shoot button would cause the tripod to sink, hence a tilted photo.

SShoal05093
This one is also tilted, no prize for guessing where the shoot button is located on my camera.

SShoal05069
The fisherman catches his fish. It's about being at the right place at the right time to take this photo.

SShoal05045
Sunset at the jetty.

SShoal05047
The jetty, sun, sea, ship, fishing rods and people fishing. A day in life @ Sultan Shoal.

SShoal05067
That's all for now folks, more photos should be coming after Sucre's exams

The webpage you see below used to be the "Bill Gates Net Worth Page". This page brought me much laughter as it contain tons of meaningless statistics and comparison to tell you how rich Bill Gates is. Heck! I even used some of his ideas in my maths lesson plan for Binomial Theorem to spice up the class. So those spammers for using his webpage for money-making scams, and those no-brainers who thought spammers will be stupid enough to host a website for their own spam.

billgatesnetworth

They could have read the note below (taken from Google cache) when they visit the webpage and stop giving people trouble. Is there no end to spamming?

Important Note to ALL BGNW visitors

We have been receiving emails asking if we are connected to any number of other
web sites that claim to be running lotteries and in other ways asking for money,
claiming that somehow,Bill Gates has approved their work. Then they refer
to this site as proof of Bill's approval.

These sites may or may not be scams, but The Bill Gates Net Worth Page (this
web site) is NOT affiliated with any other web site (apart from our
advertisers). We do not authorize any other web sites to refer to this
site (except to publish a link to it, to help us promote ourselves). We
do NOT take part in any lottery, we do not authorize, bless, or approve any
other web site and we do not ask people to send anyone
any money (though we will accept donations of cash ourselves...).

And, once again, nobody at Microsoft, up to and including Bill Gates himself,
has anything to do with this web page.

Our apologies if you were taken in by one of these offers. We had nothing to do with it.

Like the music industry, PC games have its own copy protection, in the name of safedisc 4. The following is extracted from Wiki on the recent release game - Civilization IV (sequel to one of the best games ever):

The Civilization IV game scans the hard drive for devices which may be associated with unauthorized copying (such as Daemon tools and/or Nero burning software). This is part of SafeDisc 4 technology and even refuses to acknowledge legitimate game copies otherwise. A solution to this problem is to remove all these programs or run an application in the background which hides the programs from detection.
I don't understand the way corporates are fighting this war against piracy, even if they win the battle, they will lose their customers. Safedisc 4 is mild compared to the DRM software that Sony BMG employs, it basically introduces errors that normal writers cannot read. According to Wiki again, recent versions of Safedisc have proven harder to copy, requiring specific burners capable of burning the bad sectors and odd data format. In fact, safedisc is such a nuisance to consumers that Microsoft had an FAQ on the "Please insert the correct CD-ROM" error which includes instructions on how to overcome Safedisc problems.

The public is well educated about the adverse effects of smoking, thanks to no small part of the graphic warning images on the cigarette boxes in Singapore. An example, taken from Canadian health website, is as follows:

tab7a_e

In view of the harmful effects of playing a copy protected CD in your PC, there is a need for a graphic warning on top of the current system of text warning. I shall use the packaging of the following CD as an example (note: I happen to own this CD, just that I'm a lazy bastard so I got the image from yesasia.com

Download music illegally, you get cornered and issued cease and desist letters from your ISP. Worst you get sued and stand a chance to be the next spokesman for the yellow ribbon campaign. As featured in tomorrow.sg, someone posted up a copy of the cease and desist letters on the web. Problem is, I read that legal documents by private attorney are copyrighted by itself so go see it before the poor fellow receive another cease and desist letter for reproducing and distributing the documents.

On the other hand, Sony BMG, who has a 25% share of worldwide music industry, installs digital rights management software, when you insert their copy protected CD, that does all of the following:
1.) Installs itself without permission
2.) Unable to uninstall itself
3.) Software uses spyware/virus/malware technique to hide itself
4.) The software was poorly written and it introduces a security hole in your system so your PC becomes open to malicious attack
5.) And you paid $20 for this piece of junk

Their misdeeds were uncovered by accidentally by some geeks testing out some software. He almost screwed up his computer when he tried to remove it (in fact the software disabled his CD-rom drive when he tried) and the advice he gives to regular users like us:"most users that stumble across the cloaked files with a RKR scan will cripple their computer if they attempt the obvious step of deleting the cloaked files". Sweet.

Oh, did I mention that these CDs limit you to only 3 digital copies of the CD you bought and you can only rip out in WMA or ATRAC formats (iPod users get screwed here)

Now for the million dollar questions...
1.) Which is worst?
(a) continue downloading illegal music and risk getting a cease and desist letter and stop
(b) buy original CDs and get your computer security compromised leaving it vulnerable for malicious attacks of the form including but not limited to stealing of your credit card number and identity thefts.

2.) Which has a lower odds of occuring
(a) getting caught with downloading illegal music
(b) getting your PC screwed

Music has never been so complicated. I am so disgusted that it makes me feel like boycotting all Sony products, including non-music related such as digital cameras.

sonydrm

Suddenly the line-in port for soundcards found a new lease of life for CD rippers.

It is sort of ironic that Saint Andrew's Junior College, a predominantly English speaking JC produced two of brightest stars in the Mandopop scene: Stefanie Sun 孙燕姿 and Wayne Lim (or JJ) 林俊杰. Is this pure coincidence or does SAJC provides the best environment for superstars-to-be?

I was packing my room recently when I saw my old 1998 SAJC year book and saw JJ's photos in the book.

jjsajc01
JJ singing in the 21st College Day night concert in 1998
jjsajc02
JJ performing in 阳光幼苗 (Yang Guang You Miao) 1998 默剧 (Mime). Heck, I even had the video of the night's show but too bad he put on so much make-up that no one will ever recognise him. Otherwise these are valuable footage of his early performances.

Sun Yan Zi SAJC
Stefanie 孙燕姿 SAJC class photo.

Perhaps the secret of SAJC is that they send their students from Chinese Society 中文学会, at least during my times, (at subsidized rates) to the Li Wei Song music school
李伟菘音乐学 校 and they provide opportunities for them to do school performances whereby the content is not limited to those traditional dance and songs like 明天会更好. Either that or it is just those kind of 1/200 chance that it happened this way.

cert
Hey, I have one of those certificates too. But I still can't sing, haha.

Can you imagine if I end up back at SAJC as a teacher in the future to witness the third rising star from Singapore? I just can't wait.

Shameless Fact 1: Never thought that in our absence for the past months, our blog still manages to get into the top 100 Singapore blogs in technorati.

Shameless Fact 2: There's only 126 blogs listed there.

Slap That Spam

I've got so many email notifications of comments spam for my blog that I decided to come out from my hiatus and "thank" my supporters those idiotic spammers for being there in my absence. Thanks man. There's just no way to hide from you guys, you are just dying to share with me the latest mp3 players and all about horse lovers. (see this and this) Now that I have opted for word verification, see if you are smart enough to spell.

There must be some forms of poetic revenge I could exact on those spammers when I'm old, retired and got nothing better to do.

1.) Fight poison with poison by writing a virus/worm that will caused millions of infected computers to launch an attack to the sites advertised by spammers to overload their bandwidth incuring heavy costs and zero profits.

2.) Spam onto others what others spam onto you by preaching the values of respect and moral values to the owners of the sites who spam people.

3.) Waste their time by posing as customers and ask them tons of questions about their products but end up not buying.
