Knowing What You Want In Life 2

I remember during BMT, there was this guy (of course) from another section who dream of being a doctor. On the Sunday book in after we received our 'A' levels result, he was crying because he didn't do well enough to get into medicine but he did sufficiently good to go for dentistry. Many people would be ecstatic with the kind of results he get but to him, it is not enough because he wanted to study medicine in Singapore and be a doctor.

"Teochew porridge" - Breakfast @ Bintan Mayang Sari Restaurant. Topped with my favourite stuff to go with porridge, like salted egg white and salted fish etc.

There's nothing wrong with wanting to be a doctor in life, just like there is nothing wrong if you want to be a mathematician or to be a millionaire by 30 years old etc. But what happens if you fall short? Disappointed? Lost? Feel like a loser? Do you look for something else that you want in life after failing to get what you initially wanted? That something else will never be able to replace what you want in the first place!

More importantly, what happens if you made it, to be a doctor, what do you want in life after that? Look forward to be a specialist? Find a new thing that you want? A condominium in sentosa perhaps? Or will you be satisfied to be a doctor for the rest of your life and that your life is complete because you are a doctor now. (Or a mathematician or a millionaire at 29 years old etc). My guess is, most will look for new things that they want and they will set a higher standards in their next 'wish list'. There's no limits in human greed.

Eggs, sunny side up, omelette, hard boiled, soft boiled, or even raw. Done the way you want it with ingredients of your choice.. yummy

Knowing what you want in life is only part of the story. The other part is to find the thing that you want in life that is worth wanting in your life. To me, wanting to be a doctor is not worthwhile, but wanting to save lives and heal others is something that is worth wanting for. Even if you didn't make the mark to be a doctor, you can always be a paramedic, a nurse or similar role to do what you want in life. Even if you make the mark to be a doctor, you can keep saving lives and healing people and be happy for the rest of your life. Don't dream to be a doctor because of the status, the money, the respect, be a doctor because you want to heal.

Hopefully if you want to be a mathematician, you do so because you want to admire and discover the beauty of mathematics, not because of a good prospects as a stock analyst.

Note to self - don't ever toast a croissant as it will catch fire (I didn't do it, but I sure learn not to try in the future)

As for the 3 things that I want in life, I'm realizing my dreams for 2 of them, but it will take a lifetime of effort for me to maintain it. As for the 3rd one, it will largely depends if my abilities matches my ambitions. This is my report card, 10 years after coming out with this 3 things I want in life. What will be yours 10 years from now?
