Well, since I have the Sony Alpha A700 for like 3 months already, I have only recently found time (during my MCs) to put the camera to tests in controlled environment though I must have taken more than 3500 photos with it so far. So here goes the first round of the tests... Camera ISO tests...
This is more for me to find out how high an ISO would I go up to in normal shooting. All shots are craw processed using Sony's IDC without any further post processing except for cropping. The lens used for this trials is the excellent Carl Zeiss 16-80mm f3.5-4.5 at 80mm f8.0. All images shown here are 100% crop and low NR settings in camera without further noise reduction.
ISO 200 Shadow area (Corner)
ISO 200 is the base ISO for the A700 so this is really the best the camera can do. Let's see how it performs at higher ISOs.

Noise is not an issue for me up to ISO1600 if exposed correctly... but sometimes I find that I need to push up the exposure in craw to brighten up a challenging scene so would most likely stick with ISO800 max to leave more room for error until I improve in my technique. But in terms of shooting static objects. From ISO3200 onwards, we can see that fine details on the fabric are affected by noise but bear in mind these are 100% crop so the images will still be usable for small prints. In fact, I think my H1 is only slightly cleaner at ISO400 compared to ISO6400 for the A700! So I won't hesitate to use these levels if it means that I can't capture any shot otherwise.
Side note... the amount of details capture by the Carl Zeiss lens is simply amazing... next will be a test of the CZ lens.
