Compared to 10 years back during my time, today students get a lot more opportunities to go overseas for educational trips. In fact, it is quite unthinkable to bring a whole level of students (about 400 of them) out overseas for 4 days 3 nights. (There's also the over 300 strong level 4 with a 5 days 4 nights trip and over 100 strong level 5 Bintan trip). 3 young and inexperienced teachers were given the chance to lead these 3 levels of students overseas for an adventure that cannot be taught with the textbooks.
There's a saying in Chinese,
读万卷书不如行万里路Literally means "travelling 10000 miles is better than reading 10000 books".
We didn't cover 10000 miles in our year 3 level camp, but I reckon we had travelled over 1000 km in these 4 days. I had learned many things from this trip. To coordinate a journey for 400 people is no mean feat as it rules out many activities. For example, how many places could accomodate 400 people? How do you coordinate hands-on activities for 400 people? How many villages or town have a population large enough to welcome 400 intruders? Even getting 400 people go up to their hotel rooms is a big problem that takes at least 30 minutes to do so!
This is truly a learning journey for both students and teachers.
Maybe I will document my learning points here over the next 2 weeks before my next journey - 6 days 5 nights Cambodia trip.
Total sleep count: 21 hours in 2 days after level camp, 14 hours in 3 nights of the level camp.
