My first trip to a very third world country with lots of history to back it up... Wish me luck!

$8 per entry... is it worth it? I know it's challenging to setup so many tanks in Suntec but I guess you will only find it worthwhile if you like fish... Tried as I might I can't find any bubbles trail from swimming fishes though..

Think of going to the Aquarama 2007 so I dropped by its website and to my horror they have a really bad picture on their site.
The most obvious fault with this picture lies in the water level of the tank. If there is a passage way between the 2 tanks so that an "opportunity" is open for the goldfish to upgrade to a bigger tank, the goldfish will soon realize that it can't swim across immediately. The difference in water pressure in the tanks will cause the water in the bigger tank to rush into the smaller tank. Definitely not the steady state water level as depicted in this picture. So this is wrong physically!
For benefit of doubt, let's assume that the goldfish is swimming across the bridge even though water is rushing through the bridge to fill into the smaller tank. I have had many goldfishes in my house and in terms of swimming capabilities, if they took the IPPT for fishes, goldfishes definitely need a lot of remedial training. In addition, their bloated bodies is not aerodynamically shaped hence there will be a lot of drag force acting on it. Goldfish will not be able to swim against the current. I know it because I see my goldfishes struggle to swim against the flow of current in my dad's tank.
Again for benefit of doubt, let's assume that this is an almighty goldfish able to swim like a salmon against the current of flow with ease. And if you paid attention to finer details, you find that the goldfish is leaving behind a trail of bubbles in its path. This is what we call 画蛇添足. Literally means painting feet to a snake drawing. Fishes breathe differently from humans and mammals, when they exhale, they don't leave a trail of bubbles in the sea because the oxygen that taken in is dissolved (in water) in the first place!
Let's assume the artist own some fishes and knew that fishes don't exhale all the bubbles that he drawn. Perhaps he meant that the goldfish left a trail of bubbles because it was too eager to upgrade to a condominium from it's 5 room flat. He must have seen ships moving across water creating turbulent flow hence leaving behind a trail of bubbles. Or simply played to many Super Mario games. To get turbulent flow, the goldfish must be swimming mightily fast (oh wait, this is a super goldfish right?). Even if there is turbulent flow in the water, it is unlikely to cause the dissolved oxygen to form bubbles in such an orderly manner (unless its not water but goldfish in 7 up). Try kicking your feet deep inside the swimming pool and locate the "bubbles" coming out and you will get what I mean.
Once again, poor physics prevail in the mass media.
Maybe this type of photos can be used as the year 3 holiday enrichment assignment. It's fun you know?

I'm selected for the part-time course for my masters of science in Physics in NUS for a period of 2 to 5 years. Not surprising since the application process is reduced to administrative procedures if you have at least a 2nd upper honours in Physics. The program details is taken from the physics department webpage.
A. Master of Science in Physics (Part-Time or Full-Time)I aim to finish my masters within 3 years if possible. Going by option 1, 28 MCs mean 7 modules over 6 semesters or average of 1 module per semester except for 2 in one semester. But there's a 12 MC written report to be submitted (honours thesis style?). To find a supervisor for the report may not be difficult but to find the time to complete one would be tough.
Master of Science in Physics is a coursework programme initiated as a part-time programme in January 2000. It also can be enrolled on a full-time basis now.
The objectives of the programme are as follows:
*Advanced training in fundamental aspects of physics
*Opportunities for physics teachers and other professionals to further upgrade their professional skills and qualifications.
Admission Requirements
*An honours degree in Physics from NUS or such other universities approved by NUS, or
*A Bachelor's pass degree in physics or related discipline, or completed three years of physics study in a university, or other qualifications as NUS may approve.
(I) Programme Structure
A candidate in the part-time M.Sc. Programme in Physics by coursework must complete the following in order to be awarded the M.Sc. degree:
Structure 1 (for applicants who have an Honours degree or equivalent qualifications)
EITHER
i. Complete coursework amounting to at least 28 MCs* from physics modules (which the candidate should not have passed before) at level-4000 or higher,
ii. Obtain at least 20, of the 28 MCs in (i), at level-5000 (at least 8 MC should be Group A); and
iii. Complete a project and a written report, equivalent to 12 MCs, in an area specified by the Department.
OR
i) complete coursework amounting to at least 40MCs from physics modules (which the candidate should not have passed before) at level-4000 or higher; and
ii) obtain at least 32 of the 40 MCs in (i), at level-5000
Option 2 requires me to complete 10 modules over 6 semesters which is more straight forward. But the modules offered may not be that tempting. Even though I have the option to do 2 level 4000 modules but these are usually taught during normal working hours which I can't really take up. In addition, free parking hours start only after 5:30pm. But the good thing is that it does not limit me to the group of modules to take.
Group ALooking at the list of modules, I think I will have problems getting 7 modules to read. There's only 5 that I'm interested (underlined) and 1 that I will take if I have no other choices (italics). If only I could afford the time to take 2 level 4000 modules, the level that I'm already comfortable with. Moreover, the modules may not be offered at all so beggars can't be choosers in any case. sigh... Plus the fact that I might need to go for night classes 4 times a week for 2 hours each already make me feel tired.

Last but not least, the academic calendar for the instructional program means that I am more likely to take up 2 modules in semester 1 and only 1 module in semester 2. Because the examination period for semester 1 is during the school holidays (early December) and the examination period for semester 2 is during the level camp period (early May). And there's less teaching involved in semester 1 (term 3 and 4 in school) due to EOY examinations. But there's only so many modules that I'm interested in semester 1... sigh...
Should I or should I not take up part time masters... this is the time to finally make a decision.

yeah... 1 more week and it's a break for us... yippie..
Post-mortem meeting is cancelled, that means that level camp admin will be coming to an end soon after some more paperwork. (Until the submission of their projects that is) Phew! More photos.. more faces... enjoy!
Warning, photos loaded are screen size only.. good for wallpapers and screensavers but not for prints....
3L - Year 3 Level Camp
Maybe it's too big a task to go through so many photos to blog about the level camp. Maybe I just want to give myself a big break from level camp by not sorting the photos. Anyway, day 3 pics up in webshots so it should be sufficient for those essay writing. Will be scouting around my form class pics and uploading it here another day. Meanwhile get arrowed for school newsletter and webpage writeup for level camp (which I conveniently re-directed it away). Post postmortem meeting on Friday and there's a walk/run today. So a big chance for me to share pics for something else.
See if you are featured here...

Looks like blogger fixed the bug with long posts... yippie!
Compared to 10 years back during my time, today students get a lot more opportunities to go overseas for educational trips. In fact, it is quite unthinkable to bring a whole level of students (about 400 of them) out overseas for 4 days 3 nights. (There's also the over 300 strong level 4 with a 5 days 4 nights trip and over 100 strong level 5 Bintan trip). 3 young and inexperienced teachers were given the chance to lead these 3 levels of students overseas for an adventure that cannot be taught with the textbooks.
There's a saying in Chinese,
读万卷书不如行万里路Literally means "travelling 10000 miles is better than reading 10000 books".
We didn't cover 10000 miles in our year 3 level camp, but I reckon we had travelled over 1000 km in these 4 days. I had learned many things from this trip. To coordinate a journey for 400 people is no mean feat as it rules out many activities. For example, how many places could accomodate 400 people? How do you coordinate hands-on activities for 400 people? How many villages or town have a population large enough to welcome 400 intruders? Even getting 400 people go up to their hotel rooms is a big problem that takes at least 30 minutes to do so!
This is truly a learning journey for both students and teachers.
Maybe I will document my learning points here over the next 2 weeks before my next journey - 6 days 5 nights Cambodia trip.
Total sleep count: 21 hours in 2 days after level camp, 14 hours in 3 nights of the level camp.

10 hours of sleep is cool.. shouldn't set air-con to 10hr sleep mode (auto shutdown after 10 hrs) otherwise I could have slept longer.. ah well... after almost 1 day of conversion for over 800 photos, here's a preview and also a partial load of photos taken from day 1. More rambles later.
