You see, I've got cca tomorrow so I'm doing a TGIS instead, but today is TGIF for many returning students as they received their 'O' levels result. The 2nd best in the school history according to the principal. And being my first batch of 'O' levels students (I taught one of the class for 4 months) and came to realise a few things.
1.) Ms Goh (Sok Hwa) wasn't lying to me when she said she believed that I could score A for my 'O' level chemistry 10 years ago when I did badly in Chemistry prelims because I see students going from E8 to B3 and heard of those who went from F9 to A1 in Physics. It's really achieveable.
2.) That despite hearing tons of complains about the absymal standard of English in year 5 cohort, the graduating batch, their peers, manages to score over 75% distinction in English language.
3.) That this batch of students achieved 100% passes in Physics, a feat not seen in Maths, Chemistry and Biology and we had over 75% distinctions rate compared to about 65% for the other two sciences. Whoever said Physics was difficult got to be kidding. (In fact, the distinction rate for Physics was even higher last year compared to this year according to P's powerpoint slides)
Here's some photos taken for this joyous occasion for most.
Singing the school song one last time
Queueing for his results slip
Interviewing the >= 8 A1 students
Ecstasy
Joy
"Hi Mum, I made it!"
Old friends
The end marks a new beginning...
There's one more thing I learn today too...
4.) The fact that A1 is merely an okay grade for Higher Chinese
Going around asking about your student's grades for chinese is a rather self-humiliating activity considering the fact that I got a mere B3 for the same subject 10 years ago. The conversation goes something like this without fail as proven by me and Mr Tan Jin Song.
Teacher:" So how's your Chinese grades?"This happened to not one, not two but many students whom we saw and popped this unfortunate question. I mean, if A1 is okay, what is a good grade? So I guess we could print the following remarks besides the grade that they obtain to reflect their self-perceived (lack of) achievements.
Student:" My Chinese? Okay lar"
Teacher:" So what grades do you mean by okay?"
Student:" A1 lor"

A1 -Students in our school need to learn how to manage their stress level better and realise that A1 is not just an okay grade, A1 is an excellent grade that is worth celebrating for. It makes sense to aim high but makes no sense to not feel good about achieving the highest grade. Next time I hear someone saying that an A is an okay grade will get a verbal slashing from me and a lecture on being grateful for things in life. I mean it. Right? BJ, J?ExcellentOkay, just okay
A2 -ExcellentNot so okay because Dad will nag and tempted to retake
B3 -Very GoodDissatisfied, seriously thinking of repeating Chinese in 'A' levels
B4 -GoodUnacceptable, grounded for a month and forget about ang paos
C5 -SatisfactoryPoor, disgrace to parents
C6 -FairLousy, disgrace to ancestors
D7 -DissatisfactoryAwful, considering transfer to other schools
E8 -PoorDisastrous, considering migration to other countries
F9 -FailArmageddon, the universe as you know it cease to exist
